Chez Gudule is one of the only bars in the ultra calm Picpus area. Its large terrace and its plum coloured façade make it easy to find. The inside is pleasant as well as being a little quirky. There are tables, chairs, bikes and all manner of objects suspended from the ceiling. The bar has the same prices and attracts a similar clientele to Chez Prune (on canal St Martin) as they are run by the same company. This is one of the friendliest and most animated bistros of the city. The bar dates back to the 1930’s with its marble-topped bar, wooden furniture and old style mirrors. However the specificity of this bar is the brass bands that com here to practice from the Beaux-Art (Paris most famous art school) next door. As its name indicates (The chair on the ceiling), this bar is all topsy-turvy. The mosaics on the floor are a reproduction of those at the Dome of the Palais-Garnier, the pieces of metal attached to the ceiling represent the tectonic plates of the earth, and the toilettes entirely made of stainless steel look like a bizarre spaceship.
