Barourcq has a personality of its own mainly due to the enigmatic landlord and bar staff, when they party they party hard and when it’s come down time the vibe is on a whole different level. A little way out along the canal the bar takes full advantage of the canal front which gets packed in the summer and becomes a sort of summer camp for the over 30’s. The bar lends out deck chairs and pétanque (boules) sets to anyone who asks and provide take out drinks and food until dusk. Inside is non smoking and attracts hip couples and their children for afternoon tea or hot chocolate served at small wooden tables or on low tables in a raised comfy lounge area with cushions, books and board games for rainy days. The décor is original with hanging shiny paper circles creating rays of light into the ceiling, photos or paintings by local artists decorating the walls and retro parrot wallpaper adding a splash of colour. Djs are invited to spin the latest minimal house and electro on the weekends- although the sound has to be kept to a very low level. You either love it hate it but barourq is definitely one of the most original bars in the city.
