Chez Mme Paulo, not only one of the oldest but also one of the smallest bars in Paris, situated between Voltaire and Bastille (which used to be the handicrafts workshop area of the city). Hunched backed and white haired Mme Paulo has been running the bar since 1963 and people think that she must be well into her 70’s. Some of the empty bottles on display are over thirty years old and are surely a gold mine for collectors of memorabilia. It’s often tricky to find somewhere to sit or stand as most of the space is taken up with birdcages, cats and general mess, which you have to ignore. Mme Paolo who’s age remains a mystery runs the bar by herself every night until 2am, serving rare Armagnacs and beer of a special home brew.
